Thanks to everyone who took a scope out for ISAN this year. You guys made the night a success - BUT, you really don't
do so great at sending in your results or keeping track of the number of people looking through the scopes. I have had so
many emails saying things like "we had large crowds" or "many people joined us" and I've even gotten some photos from people
that I don't see on the postings for participation or results and I'm not sure who they are or where they are from.
I have estimated from the numbers posted and from emails that we had over 10,000 of the public viewing on April 12, but
that is so much lower than last year that I think that number is too low. Most of you who posted actual numbers had larger
events than last year. So I don't know whether to trust this number or not. The good thing is that it has really alerted us
to this weakness of keeping track.
You should get a method of counting people and use it whenever you do an event. Knowing how many people attend your events
- even if it's just you on the corner with a telescope, is important. Knowing how many people you attract is helpful
in setting up future events, soliciting funds or help from other amateurs, and promoting events. The best way is to get a
little hand held clicker from the sporting goods store, they are inexpensive and easy to use.
